The Winter Woodland

Sewerby Hall & Gardens.

The Brief

We were approached by long time partners, Sewerby Hall & Gardens in Bridlington to help in the creation of an exciting new Christmas offer for the Yorkshire Coast – originally to be launched in 2020. Subsequently postponed to the following year, the site was to host an illuminated trail and light show to significantly increase their Christmas profile. Could we create the concept to include live character animation?

What We Did

We were thrilled to see a site we know so well, being given the opportunity to be seen in a whole new light (pun intended) and for the potential for what we do to reach an even wider audience. We worked with event company Blue Thunder to marry their vision for light and sound in the woodland with our concept for narrative. We created four character interactions – three live interactions with Polar Explorer, Snow Queen and Enchanted Moth which even included group craft activities – and another audio only interaction which was assimilated into the light show finale.

The Result

The event was successfully delivered for 21 nights in December to a sold-out audiences with 8,400 people visiting in the first week alone and receiving very favourable reviews online. Key to the success of the project was remaining flexible on format to keep the event covid-compliant, cascading the aims and outcomes of the event to wider stakeholders in the East Riding of Yorkshire council, and providing briefings with Sewerby Hall event staff.
