Message to the Sea !

Sewerby Hall & Gardens 2014

The Brief

Set to coincide with the re-opening of Sewerby Hall after its £2.6m HLF funded restoration and to help celebrate its 300 year anniversary in August 2014, Rusticus were asked to create a stand-alone festival style event to community engagement and enhance the visitor experience.

What We Did

Our approach was to create ‘Message to the Sea’ – an exciting mixed arts one day festival designed to generate interest and excitement in the venue by celebrating its unique cliff-top location. We took the opportunity to bring in partners – including a music stage run by Cornucopia Festival, Scrapstore Hull, the RSPB, The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Living Seas Centre, the RNLI, Flamborough Management Scheme, The Children’s Centre Bridlington, The Harbour Museum Bridlington, Yorkshire Coast Nature photography, the Coastal Voices choir, and the Artwaves Visual Arts Festival from the Spa, Bridlington!

The Result

We created a unique event which featured live music, large scale crafting, photography, nature spotting walks, soundscape & art installation and three bespoke pirate, mermaid and storybook adventures. Visitor numbers were buoyant and the venue was able to develop lasting bonds with the local arts community.

“What a fantastic activity today at Sewerby Hall. Hadn’t a clue what to expect but not laughed so much for ages. The children loved it and adults too. Will definitely look out for you again!”
